Vietnam Expanding Cashew ExportsCHICAGO - May 4/07 - SNS -- Vietnam's cashew nut industry hopes to boost exports 10% this year to a forecast 140,000 metric tons (MT). Growers are looking at expanding output in 2007 by 50,000 MT to 400,000, which will help the industry expand exports. The industry hopes to increase output to 500,000 MT by 2010. Despite the expansion in domestic production and export sales activity, Vietnam expects to be a consistent importer of raw nuts as it works to build up its domestic processing infrastructure. This could see imports average 125,000 MT a year by 2010, up from the 70,000 MT imported last year.
