Canada Cuts Summerfallow for Special CropsVANCOUVER - Apr 24/07 - SNS -- Specialty crop area in western Canada will be up 4.4% from last year at a prospective 6.88 million acres if farmers stick with their seeding intentions, but total area will remain below the recent five-year average for the sector of almost 7.26 million acres.. Trends revealed by the March 23 to 31 telephone survey of 16,800 farmers across the country were in line with pre-report expectations, but the degree of change for some crops is larger than anticipated. This is especially true of jumps in chickpea and canaryseed area planned for this spring. The decision by growers to try to plant a record field pea area this year is not a surprise.
