Higher U.S. Milk OutputWASHINGTON - Apr 18/07 - SNS -- Milk production in the 23 major States during March totaled 14.8 billion pounds, up 1.1% from March 2006, according to the USDA. February revised production, at 13.1 billion pounds, was up 0.6% from February 2006. The February revision represented a decrease of 31 million pounds or 0.2% from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,782 pounds for March, 7 pounds above March 2006. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.28 million head, 58,000 head more than March 2006, and 5,000 head more than February 2007. Milk production in the U.S. during the January - March quarter totaled 46.0 billion pounds, up 1% from the January - March quarter last year. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during the quarter was 9.13 million head, 36,000 head more than the same period last year.
