Indian Pulse News Remains BullishVANCOUVER - Apr 13/07 - SNS -- India remains the most important source of bullish markets news in the pulse sector, with the government's third crop estimate for 2006-07 lowering expected output for the season, resulting in a higher than expected shortfall. Economists in that country now believe the effective shortfall for 2006-07 stands at 3.2 million metric tons (MT) of pulses, even though production is expected to rise from 13.39 million in 2005-06 to 14.1 million MT this season. That number is down 410,000 MT from the government's second estimate and 1.05 million MT below targeted production. Interestingly, the dietary shortfall is much larger than that mentioned by the government. Based on the recommended caloric needs of the country's population, India should be consuming around 19 million MT of pulses this season -- roughly 5 million MT more than will be produced.
