Improved Demand Firms LentilsVANCOUVER - Mar 9/07 - SNS -- International lentil markets finished the week on a firmer note against improved end-user demand for both red and green lentils. An absence of last minute miracles in Australia, where production is estimated to be down 72% from last year at just 38,400 metric tons (MT), is likely contributing to buyer interest in Canadian and U.S. origin product. Markets also remain worried about seeding levels across North America because of stiff competition for land resources from major grains and oilseeds. While western Canadian growers are getting more enthusiastic about field pea at current levels, chatter about lentils is more muted, suggesting little interest in increasing green lentil area this spring.
