South Africa Pulses In DeclineVANCOUVER - Feb 27/07 - SNS -- Pulse production levels in South Africa are expected to down from last season on account of a smaller than expected dry edible bean seeded area, according to the latest crop estimates from the South African Grain Information Service (SAGIS). In its first summer crop production forecast, SAGIS said dry edible beans seedings ended up around 52,725 hectares, down from 54,880 last year. The drop reflects a tendency for seedings to whipsaw in South Africa, something that normally occurs when markets over-react to changes in local supply availability. At the same time, there is a world-wide trend towards higher grain seeded area. This is reflected in the fact summer commercial corn seedings are thought to be up about 1.044 million hectares over last year. Corn sown on developing agricultural lands has yet to be tabulated.
