Birdseeds Gain on WeekVANCOUVER - Feb 23/07 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading on a generally firmer note in both current and new crop shipping positions. In fact, new crop canaryseed, oil and confectionary sunflower is now trading at a premium to spot. That reflects deep concern about how much of these crops will be sown this year because of competition from major grains and oilseeds. At the same time, there is rising concern over the type of growing season the mid-western United States and Canadian Prairies will experience this year on account of the lingering effects of El Nino and global warming on northern hemisphere weather patterns. New crop canaryseed traded during the week at U.S. $17.25 per 100 pounds (cwt) for machine dressed product packed in bulk on an FOB shipping point basis, versus $16.75 cwt on spot markets.
