No Change In Australian Pulse EstimatesSYDNEY - Feb 19/07 - SNS -- No changes were made to the forecast size of this year's pulse harvest in Australia in the latest crop production estimates from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE). Total pulse output was left at 753,230 metric tons (MT) from 4.14 million acres, down from 2.32 million MT from 4.24 million acres last year. The biggest declines were registered by lupins, field peas and lentils, while this season's chickpea increased because of less severe decline in yields from drought and a massive increase in seeded area. "Severe ongoing drought conditions experienced throughout the major cropping areas of Australia, particularly since August 2006, have resulted in significant depletions of soil moisture profiles and have led to some of the lowest water storage levels on record. As a result the total summer crop area is estimated to have declined by around 53% in 2006-07, to 743,000 hectares," ABARE said, commenting on the 2006-07 growing season.
