Australian Livestock Auction Action DownSYDNEY - Feb 16/07 - SNS -- Livestock sold through online auctions managed by AuctionsPlus Pty Ltd fell during the past week as declines in sheep sales swamped increases in cattle. Throughput for the week totalled 23,039 sheep and lambs, versus 37,604 head the previous auction, and 5,308 head of cattle, compared to 4,369 last week. "Sheep numbers shrunk and so did the weight, apart from the very odd lot, mutton sheep are getting plainer by the week. The shortage of sheep is causing slaughterers to pick sheep up the day after sale and process them that day," AuctionsPlus's Dean Lemmich said. "Cross bred ewes are a bit like spring calving cows -- very hard to sell, as no one has the wherewithal to hold them for the required time."
