Smaller Turkish Corn Harvest Lifts ImportsWASHINGTON - Feb 8/07 - SNS -- This season's corn harvest in Turkey ended up at around 3 million metric tons (MT) from 650,000 hectares, according to the U.S. agricultural attache for the country. This is down sharply from the previous season's 3,7 million MT harvest. Despite the decline, corn consumption in Turkey has rebounded. The change reflects successful efforts to overcome the adverse effects of the Avian Influenza outbreak -- poultry feed production was only 5% lower in 2006 than in 2005. Big producers who can store their crop preferred to keep corn with the expectation of higher prices.
