Edible Bean Crop Tops 24 Million BagsWASHINGTON - Jan 12/07 - SNS -- The USDA's final production estimate for 2006 boosted the size of last year's dry edible bean harvest in the United States 2% from earlier forecast to 24.2 million cwt (100 pound units), down 9% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.54 million acres, up less than 1% from both the December forecast and the 2005 crop. The average U.S. yield is estimated at 1,577 pounds per acre, an increase of 19 pounds from the last forecast but 169 pounds below a year ago. Production is down from 2005 in 11 of the 18 producing States. Production is down from a year ago for large lima, baby lima, great northern, small white, pinto, light red kidney, dark red kidney, small red, and cranberry.
