Popcorn Corn Appointments

WASHINGTON - Dec 11/06 - SNS -- The USDA reappointed two members and named one new member to serve on the Popcorn Board. The nominees were appointed from nominations submitted by the industry.

Richard Duty, Denver, Colo.; and Garrett K. Smith, Sioux City, Iowa, have been reappointed to serve three-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2007, and ending Dec. 31, 2009.

Mike Weaver, Carmel, Ind., has been appointed to serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2007, and ending on Dec. 31, 2009.

The board -- authorized by the Popcorn Promotion, Research and Consumer Information Act -- conducts promotion, research and consumer information activities to maintain and expand the popcorn market. The nine-member board is composed of eligible popcorn processors who normally process and distribute more than 4 million pounds of popcorn annually.

The program is funded through assessments paid by eligible popcorn processors. USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service monitors the operations of the Popcorn Board.
