Jump in Chickpea HarvestVANCOUVER - Dec 7/06 - SNS -- Canada grew many more chickpeas this year than initially expected, with Statistics Canada lifting its production estimate from 150,200 metric tons (MT) in October to 182,300 MT of all classes. Production was pegged at 159,500 MT in Saskatchewan and 22,800 MT in Alberta; with desi output coming in at 23,800 MT, kabuli at 138,900 MT, and other and unspecified classes at 19,600 MT. Comparable production estimates are not available for 2005, but changes in seeded area make it clear, the biggest part of the year over year increase is in kabuli chickpeas because seedings more than doubled, while desi area was only up by half.
