Canada's Field Pea Harvest IncreasesVANCOUVER - Dec 7/06 - SNS -- Canada's field pea harvest ended up slightly larger than initially expected, inching up from Statistics Canada's October forecast of a 2.753 million metric tons (MT) harvest to a final estimate of 2.806 million. This is not a large enough of a change to have a significant impact on the supply and demand outlook for the commodity during the balance of the marketing year -- though at least half the increase will likely be carried over into the 2007-08 marketing year. For the first time, production was broken down by major class, with this year's yellow pea harvest pegged at 2.148 million MT, greens at 598,700 MT and all other classes at 58,700 MT. Official production estimates by class are not available for 2005, but it is worth noting that yellow pea area rose 14.4%, while green pea seedings fell 21.5% and other classes dropped 16.7%.
