Canadian Edible Bean Output IncreasesVANCOUVER - Dec 7/06 - SNS -- Canadian dry edible bean production posted a solid gain over last year, according to Statistics Canada's final crop production report for 2006. Total output came in at 372,700 metric tons (MT), up 16.8% from the 319,000 MT produced across the country in 2005. The larger part increase was accounted for by colored beans, where output advanced from 201,100 to 235,100 MT; while white bean output rose from 117,900 to 137,600 MT. The most significant shift in production is in Manitoba. Since 1998, more beans have been seeded in Manitoba than any other province, with the result more beans were grown there than in Ontario between 1998 and 2003. But, during the last three years, Ontario has grown more beans than Manitoba, with output in Ontario coming in at 149,600 MT this year, just ahead of the 145,600 MT grown in Manitoba.
