Australian Chickpea Controversy

VANCOUVER - Dec 5/06 - SNS -- Australia's latest crop production estimates continue to be controversial outside that country because of the estimated size of this year's chickpea harvest.

Total pulse output in the country is expected to slide from 2.316 million metric tons (MT) in 2005-06 to just 763,800 MT this season. Seeded area was down marginally from 1.715 to 1.676 million hectares, while an El Nino inspired drought savaged yields across most of the country.

Nearly all the decrease is accounted for by lupins, which are expected to plunge from 1.079 million MT last year to just 174,000 MT this season, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE).

That is down from October projections by Pulse Australia that total lupin output would reach 245,430 MT this season, including 7,080 MT of sweet albus lupin (L. albus) and 238,350 MT of narrow leafed lupin (L. angustifolius). The latest numbers suggest output could be split 7,000 and 167,000 MT.
