Indian Seeding Progress Worries PeasVANCOUVER - Dec 1/06 - SNS -- Field pea markets continue to watch seeding progress on the Indian subcontinent for signs about the depth and direction of import demand in 2007. Initial reports of a massive increase in rabi or winter season pulse area over last year caused considerable concern, but the degree of increase has narrowed as seeding approaches completion. As of November 30, total rabi season pulse area in India is 9.616 million hectares, up 1.3% from this time last year and up 2.8% from the 9.355 million hectares sown by this date in 2004. Interestingly, pea and lentil seedings are down sharply from last year, with farmers diverting that land into desi-type chickpeas, horsebeans and mung beans.
