Broiler Hatchery Mainly Higher on Week
WASHINGTON - Nov 29/06 - SNS -- U.S. broiler hatchery activity rose above week earlier levels over the week finishing November 25, 2006 but managed a mixed performance compared to last year, according to the latest USDA data.
Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 209.0 million eggs in incubators during the week. This was down 2.8% from the eggs set the same week last year.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler growers placed 161.0 million chicks for meat production. Placements were down 4.7% from the comparable week a year earlier.
