Canadian Potato Harvest Jumps 14.5%OTTAWA - Nov 24/06 - SNS -- Canada's field potato harvest jumped an estimated 14.5% this year to 5.024 million metric tons (MT), according to Statistics Canada, though still 5% below the record crop of 5.28 million MT produced in 2003. "Better weather conditions across most of Canada this year led to the best yielding potato crop in history," The statistical agency reported. "Three provinces broke the 300 cwt./acre barrier (33.6 MT/hectare) for yields. The national average was 287.1 cwt/acre (32.16 tonne/hectare), up 14% from last year." Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Manitoba saw the biggest improvement in yields. Nova Scotia and Alberta were the only provinces to show a reduction.
