Smaller U.S. Lentil CropWASHINGTON - Nov 9/06 - SNS -- Lentil production in the United States is forecast at 3.30 million cwt (100 pound units) or 149,596 metric tons (MT), down 36% from last year, according to the USDA's crop production estimates. Area for harvest is forecast at 401,000 acres, down 9% from the previous year. Average yield is expected to be 822 pounds per acre, down 354 pounds per acre from 2005. Most of the U.S. crop is green lentils, followed by Spanish brown and red. North Dakota's production, at 1.21 million cwt or 55,067 MT, is down 38% from 2005. It is now the largest lentil producing region in the United States, accounting for 36.8% of this year's harvest, down from a 38.2% market share last season.
