Hawaiian Papaya Crop Down in OctoberWASHINGTON - Nov 9/06 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.22 million pounds for October, down 12% from September and down 15% from a year ago, according to the USDA's crop production estimates. Area in crop totaled 2,140 acres, unchanged from last month but down 7% from October 2005. Harvested area totaled 1,330 acres, down less than 1% from last month and 6% lower than last year. Weather conditions during October ranged from sunny to periods of heavy showers. Harvest was active but fewer fruit were picked. Young plantings made good progress.
