U.S. Milk Output Up In SeptemberWASHINGTON - Oct 18/06 - SNS -- Milk production in the 23 major States during September totaled 13.3 billion pounds, up 2% from September 2005, according to the USDA. August production, unrevised at 13.9 billion pounds, is up 1.6% from August 2005. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,615 pounds for September, 16 pounds above September 2005. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.25 million head, 79,000 head more than September 2005, but 6,000 head less than August 2006. Milk production in the U.S. during the July - September quarter totaled 44.7 billion pounds, up 1.4% from the July - September quarter last year. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during the quarter was 9.12 million head, 57,000 head more than the same period last year.
