Turkey Hatchery Activity Rises in SeptemberWASHINGTON - Oct 13/06 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity improved in the United States last month, with both the number of poults placed and eggs in incubators rising, according to data accumulated by the USDA. Turkey eggs in incubators on October 1, 2006, in the United States totaled 29.8 million, up 12% from October 1, 2005. Eggs in incubators were up 1% from the September 1, 2006 total of 29.5 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central up 8% at 4,762,000 eggs; West North Central up 7% at 11,501,000; North and South Atlantic up 16% at 9,666,000; and South Central and West up 28% at 3,871,000 eggs in incubators. The 23.2 million poults placed during September 2006 in the United States were up 2% from the number placed during the same month a year earlier. Placements were 7% below August 2006.
