USDA's Cotton Estimate Rises 2%WASHINGTON - Oct 12/06 - SNS -- Cotton production in the United States is forecast at 20.7 million 480-pound bales, up 2% from last month but down 14% from last year's record high production, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Yield is expected to average 774 pounds per acre, up 12 pounds from last month but down 57 pounds from last year. The October harvested area is expected to total 12.8 million acres, unchanged from last month but down 7% from 2005. The higher production forecast is a result of better than expected yields throughout the Delta and parts of the Southeast. Upland cotton harvested area, at 12.5 million acres, is unchanged from last month but down 8% from last year.
