Philippines Allows Chicken ImportsWASHINGTON - Oct 8/06 - SNS -- The Philippine Secretary of Agriculture authorized the domestic poultry industry to import 3,000 metric tons (MT) of chicken in order make up for losses caused by the recent typhoon that hit the Philippines. Agricultural damages caused by Typhoon Milenyo is now estimated at U.S. $24 million, with damages to agricultural infrastructure estimated at $2.92 million. Rice, fishery and poultry topped the list of damaged commodities, while high value commercial crops such as banana, mango and papaya were similarly affected. Based on ongoing industry assessments, poultry losses due to damaged poultry grow-out houses were estimated at about $5 million. The rehabilitation and repair of poultry houses is expected to take a few months and will likely affect domestic supply in the coming months.
