Business, Politics Keeps Trade Busy

CHICAGO - Oct 4/06 - SNS -- Overnight markets saw a solid increase in the level of trading activity, led by reports of fresh sales of wheat to Iraq and Egypt, along with Pacific Rim tenders for corn and soybeans.

International political news were pushed back onto the minds of commodity traders this week, with North Korea's stated intention to test a nuclear weapon in an effort to regain the attention of the United States and China, who have been blocking and/or impeding the delivery of essential goods such as oil.

At the same time the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan is causing some Republicans to believe that not only is the U.S. losing the civil war in Iraq, it is losing the civil war in Afghanistan.

This has Republican Senator Bill Frist talking appeasement with the Taliban despite its known support for the Al Queda terrorist organization. Needless to say, Democratic candidates in the U.S. mid-term elections are enjoying the chance to sound tougher than the Republicans with respect to the need to limit the effectiveness of terrorist organizations.
