Australia Expects Smaller Sugar CropWASHINGTON - Oct 3/06 - SNS -- Australian should produce 4.95 million metric tons (MT) of sugar in 2006-07, down from last year because of the impact smut and cyclone Larry had on area and sugar content. The U.S. agricultural attache for Australia reports that by the end of September, 55% of the cane area had been harvested. The 2006-07 crop was adversely impacted by tropical cyclone Larry in March, while continued heavy rainfall during the harvest period has slowed the process and caused Commercial Cane Sugar (CCS) content to fall.
