South African Expanding Pulse AreaVANCOUVER - Sep 28/06 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in South Africa for the 2005-06 marketing year was pegged at 67,250 metric tons (MT) from 54,880 hectares, down from last year's 69,820 MT harvest. Looking toward the 2006-07 season, the South African Grain Information Service (SAGIS) predicts seeded area will increase modestly to 55,000 hectares. A return to average yields would see production advance to 72,200 MT. If realized this would see total pulse production in South Africa advance from 81,350 MT in 2005-06 to a prospective 89,800 MT in 2006-07. The potential for a larger edible bean crop comes at a time when expanded seedings of lupins are expected to see production of that crop jump from 14,100 MT in 2005-06 to 17,600 MT this season.
