Citrus Harvest Pegged at 11.6 Million TonsWASHINGTON - Sep 21/06 - SNS -- Last season's citrus harvest in the United States was finally pegged at 11.6 million tons by the USDA, virtually unchanged from the 2004-05 season but 35% lower than the record high production of 17.8 million tons for the 1997-98 season. Florida accounted for 68% of total U.S. citrus production, California totaled 28%, while Texas and Arizona produced the remaining 4%. Florida's orange production, at 148 million boxes, is down 1% from the previous season. Grapefruit utilization in Florida, at 19.3 million boxes, is up 51% from last season's utilization. Florida's total citrus utilization increased 3% from the previous season but is 40% below the 2003-04 season. Bearing acreage, at 576,400 acres, is 65,000 acres below the 2004-05 season. This is the lowest bearing acreage since the 1993-94 season. Utilized citrus production in California fell 6% from the 2004-05 season. California's all orange production, at 57.5 million boxes, is 11% lower than the previous season. Grapefruit production, at 6.00 million boxes, is down 2% from the 2004-05 season.
