Monthly Papaya Harvest Rises
WASHINGTON - Sep 12/06 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.11 million pounds for August, up 16% from last month but down 11% from a year ago, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates.
Area in crop totaled 2,160 acres, up 23% from last month but down 8% from August 2005. Harvested area totaled 1,335 acres, down 12% from August and 7% lower than the same month last year.
Favorable weather conditions encouraged flowering and fruit set in mature orchards while younger orchards continued to make good progress. Additional plantings were made in the Puna District of Hawaii Island.
