Monthly Papaya Harvest RisesWASHINGTON - Sep 12/06 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.11 million pounds for August, up 16% from last month but down 11% from a year ago, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates. Area in crop totaled 2,160 acres, up 23% from last month but down 8% from August 2005. Harvested area totaled 1,335 acres, down 12% from August and 7% lower than the same month last year. Favorable weather conditions encouraged flowering and fruit set in mature orchards while younger orchards continued to make good progress.
