Food Aid Supports Yellow PeasVANCOUVER - Sep 8/06 - SNS -- North American field pea markets finished the week on a firmer note for whole yellow peas. Markets in the United States were helped by the USDA's purchase of 4,350 metric tons (MT) of split yellow and 8,330 MT of whole yellow peas for shipment from origin in October. Average prices paid for the splits were down from last month, while the USDA paid more for the whole yellow peas. Interestingly, the split yellow peas only traded at a 30 cent per 100 pound premium to the wholes. This reflects the expectation most of the splits will be shipped from the U.S. midwest, while some of the wholes may come from the Pacific Northwest.
