Average Belgian Pear HarvestTHE HAGUE - Sep 11/02 - STAT -- Pear production in Belgium is expected to come in at the recent five-year average of 145,000 metric tons (MT), while European pear production is forecast to be at normal levels. With prices expected to decline across the coming season, the U.S. agricultural attache here believes fresh pear consumption will remain close to the 45,500 MT used during the 2001-02 marketing year. As pear production has been more profitable than apple production in recent years, a recent 3% per year increase in pear production area is expected to continue, with exports expected to increase.
