Solid Increase in Broiler HatcheryWASHINGTON - Sep 11/02 - SNS -- A solid increase in broiler hatchery activity was recorded in the United during the week ending September 7, led by a solid jump in the number of broiler eggs set. Data compiled by the USDA revealed commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 204 million eggs in incubators. This was up 3% from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 82%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier. Broiler growers in the 19-State weekly program placed 168 million chicks for meat production. Placements were up 1% from the comparable week in 2001.
