Solid Jump in Canadian ChickpeasVANCOUVER - Aug 25/06 - SNS -- Chickpea production will be up sharply this summer on account of a major increase in kabuli plantings in western Canada this year. Statistics Canada expects production in Saskatchewan to end up around 135,600 MT, while Alberta produces 27,600 MT for a 163,200 MT harvest, up from 103,900 MT last year and the recent low of 51,200 MT set in 2004. Kabuli chickpeas account for 66% of the total seeded area, desis 18.3% and other types of chickpeas 14%. Desis and other classes outyield kabulis, suggesting kabuli output could be around 96,000 MT, desi about 37,000 MT and other classes 30,000 MT.
