Birdseeds Remain FirmVANCOUVER - Aug 18/06 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets remain relatively firm against ongoing worries about yield prospects for Canadian canaryseed and white proso millet in the United States. Neither crop appreciates the kind of hot and dry weather which has been in place across much North America's Prairie region in recent weeks. Below average yields are expected in Canada, helping keep markets firm. Confectionary sunflower seed markets are being helped by good buying interest from domestic birdseed packagers. This is helping support prices in both Canada and the United States. Markets are also helped by the fact seeded area is down from last year and production will decline sharply.
