Senegal's Peanut Crops Hurt by DroughtWASHINGTON - Sep 9/02 - SNS -- Drought is reducing peanut crop production prospects in Senegal, believes the USDA's Foreign Agriculture Service. This year's crop is now expected to plunge below 500,000 metric tons (MT). This is a massive reduction from initial forecasts the crop would only slip from last season's 903,000 MT harvest to around 900,000 MT across 2002-03. The center of the drought lies directly over the Groundnut Basin and the drought extends into neighboring countries, including the Gambia, southern Mauritania, and southwestern Mali. The government of the Gambia has already reported failure of its rice crop, which also lies within the Groundnut Basin. The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
