Strong Jump in Sugar Beet PotentialWASHINGTON - Aug 11/06 - SNS -- This year's sugarbeet crop is forecast to be 31.8 million tons, 16% above last year's production, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Growers in the 11 sugarbeet producing States expect to harvest 1.34 million acres, up 2% from June and up 8% from last year. The yield is forecast at 23.7 tons per acre, 1.5 tons above 2005. If realized, this yield would tie the record high, set in 2000. Both area harvested and production are forecast higher than last year in all States except California and Michigan. In Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, forecasted yield is down from last year due to dry conditions. However, Minnesota's, Montana's and North Dakota's crops are expected to set record high yields, at 22.7, 26.5, and 23.0 tons per acre, respectively.
