Poultry Slaughter Rises in JuneWASHINGTON - Jul 31/06 - SNS -- Poultry slaughter activity increased in the United States in June, with 3.67 billion pounds certified wholesome on a ready-to-cook weight basis, up 2% from the amount certified in June 2005, according to the USDA. The preliminary total live weight of poultry inspected during June 2006 was 4.89 billion pounds, up 1% from 4.83 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 4.16 billion pounds, up 1% from June 2005. Mature chickens, at 73.5 million pounds, were down 6% from the previous year. Turkey inspections totaled 642 million pounds, an increase of 4% from a year ago. Ducks totaled 16.0 million pounds, up 1% from last year. Young chickens slaughtered during June 2006 averaged 5.45 pounds per bird, up 2% from June 2005. The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.30 pounds per bird, up 12% from a year ago.
