World Lentils Stay QuietVANCOUVER - Jul 21/06 - SNS -- International lentil markets were relatively quiet during the past week as market participants in western Canada and the U.S. midwest worked hard to lose the crop to the heat wave which is blanketing the region. Processors and growers say temperatures will likely be high enough to cause flowers to abort, resulting in a tangible decline in yield potential. On the other hand, in areas where seeds are filling growers say that if they do not get rain now, they don't want any until the last half of August. By which time they will be done harvesting. The impact of the heat on crops is also a factor of the density of the plant canopy. That can minimize moisture losses from soil, allowing seeds to fill better than would otherwise be the case.
