Milk Output Up In June

WASHINGTON - Jul 18/06 - SNS -- Milk production rose 1.9% in June to 14 billion pounds in the 23 major producing states in the U.S., reports the USDA.

May revised production, at 14.7 billion pounds, was up 2.7% from May 2005. The May revision represented a decrease of 14 million pounds or 0.1% from last month's preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,695 pounds for June, 5 pounds above June 2005. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.27 million head, 128,000 head more than June 2005, and 9,000 head more than May 2006.

Milk production in the U.S. during the April - June quarter totaled 46.9 billion pounds, up 2.3% from the April - June quarter last year. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during the quarter was 9.13 million head, 93,000 head more than the same period last year.
