Small Hike in Fresh Vegetable AreaWASHINGTON - Jul 10/06 - SNS -- Fresh vegetable seeded area inched up in the United States, with the result the USDA expects this year's harvested area for 11 selected fresh market vegetables during the summer quarter to rise 1% over to 300,300 acres. Acreage increases in snap beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, sweet corn, and bell peppers more than offset acreage decreases in celery, cucumbers, head lettuce, and tomatoes. Area forecast for melon harvest is 108,200 acres, down 3% from last year. Cantaloup area is forecast at 38,600 acres, 6% below 2005. Honeydew area, at 14,600 acres, is up 4% from last year.
