Myanmar Pulse Exports SurgeVANCOUVER - Jul 7/06 - SNS -- Shipments of pulses and dry edible beans from Myanmar rose sharply in May, almost doubling to 124,795 metric tons (MT) when compared to last year. Strong demand from China and India is behind the surge in export activity. Matpe accounted for 50% of the total exports, followed by Mung beans (20%) and Toor Whole (16%). India remains the major importer, accounting for 75% of the total exports, while China was the destination for 11% of all pulses shipped. Discussing the market situation in Myanmar, the U.S. agricultural attache for the country said, "Prices for most beans and pulses increased in May due to active export shipments. An increase in prices for Mung beans reflects vigorous border trades, especially as to shipments to China. "Trade sources reported that about 32,700 MT of Matpe (raw), 5,800 MT of Matpe (ready cargo) and 1,100 MT of Mung beans were traded in May at Bayint Naung whole sale market in Rangoon."
