India Surprises Chickpea MarketsVANCOUVER - Jun 23/06 - SNS -- International chickpea markets were surprised by a late week announcement by the Indian government banning all exports of all pulses, effective immediately. Processors had been developing a good market for medium and large caliber kabuli chickpeas from planting seed imported from Mexico. Shippers in Canada, the United States and elsewhere welcomed the news because they have been facing increased competition from India in recent months. Though some buyers say overall quality is not as good as from traditional suppliers, prices have been attractive and garnering India's shippers considerable attention.
