Indian Bans Pulse ExportsVANCOUVER - Jun 23/06 - SNS -- The Indian government has punctuated its decision to allow duty free imports of pulses until next year by banning exports. The government hopes both efforts will increase supplies of pulses on domestic markets and bring prices under control. Over the past year, wholesale prices for prices for chana or chickpeas have jumped 40% from U.S. $385 per metric ton (MT) to $535 MT; while wholesale prices for urad or black gram jumped 70% from $410 to $$685 MT. Union Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar says there is no time limit on the pulse export ban, but said it will be in effect until at least Diwali in mid-October.
