Special Crop Condition Improves in Saskatchewan

REGINA - Jun 12/06 - SNS -- The condition of this year's specialty crops improved in Saskatchewan during the past week, with Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food reporting 73% of all pulses are rated normal up from 71% last week. The percentage of pulses rated behind in development remained at 19%.

The percentage of crops rated fair or worse decreased during the past week for all specialty crops; while the percentage rated excellent was up for all crops, ranging from 23% of this year's mustard seed rated excellent to 29% of peas, 34% of lentils and 35% of sunflower seed.

Topsoil moisture conditions on crop lands were reported as generally adequate on the western side of the province, and surplus on the eastern side.

Flooding was the main source of crop damage during the past week, and was reported in all regions of the grainbelt. Weeds, insects (flea beetles, cutworms, wire worms), disease (leaf diseases, ascochyta blight, root rot), and gophers were the cause of more isolated sources of crop damage.
