Turkey Expects Smaller Tomato CropWASHINGTON - Jun 4/06 - SNS -- Fresh tomato production in Turkey is expected to come in around 9.9 million metric tons (MT) this year, down from 10.05 million MT last year, according to a recent report from the U.S. agricultural attache for the country. The decline stems from a 20% reduction in industrial tomato prices at a time when inflation is driving up the cost of farming 8%. This is driving land from industrial tomatoes to crops such as red peppers and sweet corn. Cooler than usual and rainy weather in the leading industrial tomato regions delayed planting and made crop vulnerable to possible bad weather in October. The decline in industrial tomato output should result in reduced tomato paste production in 2006-07. That is expected to fall from 270,000 MT last season to a forecast 250,000 MT.
