WCE Sets Daily RecordWINNIPEG - Jun 1/06 - SNS -- The Winnipeg Commodity Exchange (WCE) saw a record number of futures contracts trade on May 31. A total of 50,520 futures and options contracts exchanged hands, besting the previous record of 44,503 futures and options contracts set on March 31. The canola futures contract recorded two daily volume records yesterday. There were 15,242 November 2006 canola futures contracts traded which is the highest daily volume for a November canola futures contract. Total trade in canola futures on May 31st was 31,364 contracts which is the highest daily volume for canola on record. Three daily volume records were set in western barley futures contracts. The July 2006 western barley futures contract posted volume of 9,625 which is the highest for any July western barley futures contract. Likewise, the October 2006 western barley set a record for that contract month with 9,065 contracts being traded. The total volume of trade in western barley futures contracts reached 18,740 contracts which is a daily record for western barley futures contracts. Total open interest at the end of May was 114,784 contracts which is 69.4% higher than the end of May a year ago.
