Smaller Crop Boosts Pakistan's ImportsVANCOUVER - May 25/06 - SNS -- Problems with this year's pulse harvests in Pakistan will result in a significant increase in total imports in 2006. Production of all types of pulses is expected to plunge from 1.28 million metric tons (MT) last year to just 775,300 MT this year; forcing total pulse imports to jump from an estimated 314,900 MT in 2005 to a forecast 463,200 MT this year. Interestingly, this includes the prospect India will export kabuli chickpeas to Pakistan after having imported desi chickpeas last year, reflecting efforts by India to grow exportable surpluses of the bean from planting seed originally imported from Mexico.
