Chickpeas Firm Across 2006-07VANCOUVER - May 19/06 - SNS -- International chickpea markets are expected to remain firm across the 2006-07 marketing campaign, reflecting tight stocks in all major exporting markets, according to speakers at this year's CICILS convention in Goa, India. Speaking to convention delegates, Sudhakar Tomar of Hakan Agro-Industries said, "The prices will be firm as there is a mismatch of spot and future availability. Currently, there are no stocks in the pipeline." Potential exportable surpluses could total 235,000 metric tons (MT), versus a basic import requirement for 150,000 MT of kabuli chickpeas, but the timing of the availability of product from various origins and the fact chickpeas are sold on a sized basis will contribute to firmer markets. Mexico and India could supply through July, while Turkey, Syria and Iraq could supply during August-November and Australia, the US and Canada from December to February. Tomar reckons India could double its kabuli chickpea exports from an estimated 60,000 MT in 2005-06 to a projected 120,000 MT this season.
