Chickpeas Relieved by Canadian Area HikeVANCOUVER - Apr 28/06 - SNS -- International chickpea markets finished the week on a relatively strong note, buoyed by the latest Canadian seeding intentions report. Fears Canadian growers would push chickpea area through the roof in response to strong markets this season appear to be unfounded. Growers in that country intend to boost plantings from 195,000 to 295,000 acres. All of the increase is expected to be in standard kabuli and 7mm type chickpeas, with desi chickpea seedings little changed from last year. Companies which specialize in sales to Indian subcontinent wish Canada would plant more desi chickpeas to take advantage of steep reduction in the size of Pakistan's harvest and assertions of a disappointing result in India. Pakistan will convert from being a exporter to a net importer of desi chickpeas and other pulses this year to make up for the shortfall.
